I sometimes struggle with trends. I love fashion, but I don’t want to be a slave to it. Usually when something new is booming in popularity, I try to avoid it for long enough gauge my actual feelings. I would rather be fashionably late to the party than rush in and regret it. I’ve written about this before, and it’s also shown pretty clearly in my owning the hottest bag of 2009 about six years too late. Guess what, I still love it after all that time!
Following a trend sometimes means instant gratification, but can also make you fall out of love with your closet far too soon. I think there is a way of incorperating trends into your wardrobe without completely succumbing to them. One way I do this is by picking to buy these items from high street stores like Forever 21, H&M or Zara where I won’t have to spend a fortune. I try not to buy too much fast fashion, but if I’m not sure about something I won’t invest in it.
The other key is buying something that’s more of a nod to the trend or the more basic interpretation of it. Take this orange crochet dress for instance. I would have done much better if it was black or white since I rarely wear bright colours and was already stepping out of my comfort zone with the crochet. I did wear it as a cover up in Mexico last month at least (and it’s from H&M) but I would have been more than fine without it.
My latest yearning for a trendy item was for culottes. They came onto my radar earlier this year and at first I was pretty opposed to them. Like many trends, over time (and after seeing many beautifully styled looks on other bloggers!) I warmed up to them. Even though I unflatteringly described them to my boyfriend as “those wide short pants you hate” I am always happy to find a work-appropriate piece I want to wear after hours too.
I think having them in black and the fact that dress pants are a staple in my wardrobe already will bode well for this not becoming just another trend. Plus I’m pretty excited to dress them up for the holidays too. As always only time with tell, but I try to make better informed and more practical fashion decisions every season. Wish me luck!
